Baseboard and casing installation is the measuring, cutting, fitting, and fastening of interior trim at the base of walls and around door and window openings. It covers new construction trim-out, full replacement of existing trim, partial room upgrades, and patch-matching damaged sections.
It is the right call when a room needs its first trim, when old baseboard is damaged or mismatched, or when a renovation leaves raw drywall edges at floors and doors. On Cape Cod, trim installed without acclimating to the home first will move. Humid summers and dry winters cycle the wood, and material selected for those conditions fits and stays tight where lesser choices open up.

This page covers what baseboard and casing installation includes, what it costs in 2026, how material options compare for Cape Cod interiors, and what separates a tight, lasting finish from one that gaps and moves within a season.

Before You Start · Cape Cod
Visible gaps, split joints, and water staining point to replacement rather than a repaint. Surface flaws are worth fixing. Structurally failed or badly fitted trim is not, because paint over a bad joint is still a bad joint.
The one you may overlook is an acclimation problem from the original install. Trim put in during humid August or dry February without letting the wood adjust to the room's moisture content will shrink or swell and open joints that looked tight on day one. New material needs time in the space before it goes up.
Baseboard and Casing · Cape Cod
A baseboard and casing installation with Forty One Construction runs through seven steps, from the first on-site measurement to the final nail-hole fill and caulk in Hyannis. Each step has a clear purpose, and you know what is happening before we move to the next one. Here is what each covers.
Planning · Phase One
We walk each room, measure linear footage at every wall run, door opening, and window, and note inside and outside corners, returns, and any wall or floor conditions that affect the trim. You get a written scope and material list before anything is ordered.
We confirm the profile, species, and grade that fits the job, paint-grade primed MDF, finger-joint pine, solid poplar, or stain-grade pine or oak. Material is ordered and brought into the home to acclimate to room humidity before installation begins. Trim installed at the wrong moisture content moves after it is fastened.
Installation · Phase Two
If existing trim is coming out, we pull it cleanly and prep the wall and floor surface. That includes minor patching of drywall or plaster at the trim line and checking that the base is flat enough for the new profile to sit correctly without gaps behind it.
Each piece is cut to fit the room with a miter saw. Outside corners get true 45-degree miters. Inside corners are coped, not mitered, so seasonal movement does not open the joint. Returns are cut where baseboard terminates at a door or step. Every piece is dry-fitted before it is fastened.
Trim is fastened with a pneumatic finish nailer and construction adhesive where needed. Nails are set below the surface so they can be filled. Fastener placement follows the stud layout so the baseboard is held to the wall, not just to drywall.
Finish · Phase Three
Every nail hole is filled with wood filler and sanded flush. Seams at the wall, floor, and ceiling lines are caulked so the trim reads as a continuous finished surface. The goal is a joint you cannot see and a surface the painter can work directly.
We walk the finished rooms with you, check the reveal lines, corner joints, and caulk, and make any adjustments before we pack up. The job is not done until you have looked at it and agreed it is right.
Scope · What You Are Buying
A baseboard and casing quote from Forty One Construction covers measuring, material and fastener costs (unless customer-supplied), all cutting, coping, and mitering, installation, nail hole filling, and caulking at wall and floor seams. Painting or staining, old trim removal and disposal, drywall or plaster repair beyond minor patching, and furniture moving are typically quoted separately rather than assumed into the number.
Included in the quote
Not included, quoted separately
Done correctly means inside corners coped rather than mitered so seasonal movement does not open the joint, outside corners mitered to true 45 degrees, nail holes filled and sanded, reveal lines consistent throughout a room, wood trim acclimated to 6 to 9 percent moisture content before install to prevent shrinkage and warping, and all seams caulked ready for paint or stain. Those are not finishing touches. They are what separates trim that still looks right in year three from trim that does not.
Trim Cost · Cape Cod
Baseboard and casing installation on Cape Cod typically runs $8 to $16 per linear foot installed in 2026, with Forty One Construction quoting each job in Hyannis after an on-site visit. Stain-grade hardwood profiles, complex rooms with many corners, and old trim removal land at the higher end.
Pricing is per linear foot, and a whole-house trim-out on an average three to four bedroom home runs three to five days of labor.
Cost Factors
The price moves with a handful of real drivers, including linear footage, material grade, profile complexity, number of corners, and whether old trim needs to come out first.
More rooms and longer wall runs mean more material, more cuts, and more labor hours.
Paint-grade primed MDF costs least. Stain-grade solid pine or oak and complex profiles cost more per linear foot.
Each inside corner that needs coping and each outside miter or return adds cutting time. Rooms with many offsets cost more than open runs.
Pulling old baseboard or casing cleanly without damaging the wall, and hauling it out, is work that adds to the quote when it is part of the job.
Uneven walls or floors that need patching before trim can sit flat add prep time and cost.
2026 Cost Guide
These ranges are a starting point for planning. Every job is quoted after an on-site measurement and assessment.
| Job size / scope | Typical range on Cape Cod (2026) |
|---|---|
| Single room, 150 to 250 linear feet | Half day to 1 day of labor at $8-$16/linear ft |
| Whole-house trim-out, average 3 to 4 bedroom home | 3 to 5 days; material and profile grade drive the final number |
| Stain-grade hardwood or complex custom profiles | Upper end of range; finishing time adds 1 to 2 weeks |
Material lead time and acclimation factor in too. Every job is quoted after an on-site visit and measurement.

The right trim material depends on the room, the finish, and how the house handles humidity. On Cape Cod, indoor moisture cycles between humid summers and dry heated winters, and trim that was not acclimated or was not stable to begin with will move. Below are the main options we install, honestly compared. Whatever the material, we acclimate it to the room before it goes up.
Paint-Grade · Budget Tier
The most affordable option and the most common in new construction. MDF is dense and takes paint well, but it does not tolerate moisture at cut ends, so it is not the right call in bathrooms or laundry rooms without care at every joint. Best for dry rooms where the finish will be painted.
Paint-Grade · Budget to Mid
Kiln-dried pine pieces joined end to end into a stable, paintable board. It costs slightly more than MDF and handles humidity better at exposed ends. A practical choice for most paint-grade rooms in a Cape Cod home where seasonal moisture swings are moderate.
Paint-Grade · Mid Tier
Poplar is a stable, close-grained hardwood that paints cleanly and holds a crisp profile over time. It costs more than finger-joint pine but less than stain-grade hardwood, and it is the preferred paint-grade upgrade for rooms where a sharp, lasting edge matters most.
Stain-Grade · Natural Finish
Clear pine and red oak are the standard stain-grade options for baseboard and casing. They show grain, take stain evenly, and match existing hardwood floors when spec'd correctly. Acclimation before install is more important with solid stock because it moves more than engineered or composite options.
PVC · Moisture-Prone Rooms
All-plastic trim board that does not absorb moisture, swell, or rot. The right call for bathrooms, mudrooms, and any space where water or humidity is a persistent issue. It paints well and holds its shape through the humidity swings Cape Cod interiors see between August and February.
Material Comparison
Compare where each material fits best, how it handles Cape Cod's indoor humidity cycles, and the level of maintenance it requires after install.
| Option | Best for | Handles humidity well | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primed MDF | Dry painted rooms | Fair, avoid wet areas | Low |
| Finger-joint pine | Paint-grade rooms | Good with sealed ends | Low |
| Solid poplar | Paint-grade upgrade | Very good | Low |
| Solid pine or oak | Stain-grade finish | Good with acclimation | Low to medium |
| PVC or composite | Wet or humid rooms | Excellent | Very low |
We name real brands when we spec a job, profile lines from Metrie, Windsor Mouldings, and House of Fara for stock profiles. If a more affordable material is the right fit for the room and budget, we will tell you that rather than spec up for its own sake.
Project Timeline · Cape Cod
A baseboard and casing installation with Forty One Construction takes roughly half a day to one day for a single room of 150 to 250 linear feet, three to five days for a whole-house trim-out of an average three to four bedroom home, and one to two weeks for large or high-end custom projects with stain-grade wood and complex profiles including finishing time.
Two things affect that window here. Material acclimation adds time before the first cut goes in. Wood trim needs to sit in the home at room temperature and humidity before install, and skipping that step is how joints open up after the job is done. Summer scheduling on Cape Cod also compresses quickly between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when seasonal homeowners want work finished before they arrive. We build honest lead time into the schedule rather than promising a date we cannot hold.
Trim Quality · Cape Cod
The joints decide it, not the paint. A baseboard that looks fine on day one can open at every inside corner by spring if the wood was not acclimated, the corners were mitered instead of coped, or the fasteners missed the framing. On Cape Cod, the humidity swing between a humid August and a dry heated February is wider than inland, and trim installed without accounting for it shows the difference.
Inside corners that are mitered look tight at install and open as the wood moves through a humidity cycle. Coped joints, where one piece is cut to ride over the profile of the other, stay closed because they are not fighting the wood's natural movement. Every inside corner we cut is coped. Outside corners get a true 45-degree miter, checked for square before the piece is fastened. Dry-fitting before nailing catches problems that cannot be fixed after the nailer runs.
Trim installed at the wrong moisture content will shrink or swell after it is fastened. We bring material into the home and let it reach 6 to 9 percent moisture content before installation begins. That step costs time at the front of the job and prevents movement, gapping, and nail pops at the back of it. In a Cape Cod home where summer humidity can be high and winter heating is dry, the swing the material has to survive is real, and acclimation is what gets it there in stable condition.
Service Life · Interior Trim
The installation decides it, not the profile. Trim that was acclimated, coped at the inside corners, fastened into the framing, and caulked at the seams stays tight through the humidity cycles a Cape Cod interior puts it through. We do not publish a single lifespan figure because the honest answer depends on the material, the room conditions, and the original install quality, and a number that ignores all three is not useful.
Forty One Construction backs labor and installation with a 5-year workmanship warranty. Manufacturer warranties on trim materials are provided separately by the manufacturer and vary by product.
Local Carpenter · Cape Cod
Forty One Construction installs baseboard and casing across Cape Cod from our office in Hyannis, and the local conditions shape how we do the work. Humid summers mean trim must be acclimated before it goes up. The wide swing between August humidity and dry winter heat means coped joints and stable materials are not optional details here the way they might be treated on an inland job.
We serve homeowners from the outer Cape through the canal, Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans, Chatham, Brewster, Harwich, Dennis, and Yarmouth on one side, and Hyannis, Centerville, Osterville, Cotuit, Mashpee, Falmouth, Bourne, Sagamore, Sandwich, and Barnstable through the mid- and upper Cape, along with Plymouth. See our work in Hyannis and Barnstable.
Credentials · Accountability
Daniel Araujo holds a Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License (CSL), Unrestricted (#CS-123114), and the company holds Home Improvement Contractor registration #217279. We carry $1,000,000/$2,000,000 general liability coverage, and a certificate of insurance is available on request. The numbers are printed so you can check them. Learn more about us.
We submit drawings to the Town of Barnstable Building Division and pull the permit in our name. Footings reach frost depth, ledgers get through-bolted and flashed, and every connection is built to pass framing and final inspection, not just to look finished.
You get a written scope up front, so the number in your hand is tied to specific materials and work, not a vague figure that grows halfway through. When quotes look interchangeable on paper, that's usually where the real difference sits.
Interior Finish · Cape Cod
Planning an interior finish project often means more than baseboard and casing alone. If you are renovating a room from the floor up, our carpentry crew handles the full scope of finish work. For exterior openings where new door or window trim ties into the interior casing, we manage both sides of that detail so the profiles and reveals match throughout the home.

Custom Decks · Cape Cod
Massachusetts consumer guidance advises homeowners not to pay more than one-third of the estimated cost upfront unless special-order materials are needed. We work within that standard and tie payments to a written scope. Talk specifics with us before you sign anything.
We install primed MDF, finger-joint pine, solid poplar, and stain-grade pine or oak, as well as PVC or composite trim for moisture-prone rooms. Profile lines include Metrie, Windsor Mouldings, and House of Fara stock profiles. We match the material to the room, the finish, and the budget rather than defaulting to one option.
Most of the work is contained to the rooms being trimmed. Cutting happens on-site, typically in a staging area with a miter saw set up away from finished surfaces. Dust and debris are managed as we go. During summer on Cape Cod, Route 28 and Route 6 traffic can shift arrival times, and we factor that into the schedule.
Clear the rooms of furniture or ask us about that when we quote the job, since furniture moving is typically handled separately. Make sure the flooring is down if we are trimming over it, and let us know about any drywall or plaster repairs you are planning, since those need to be done and dry before trim goes up. We handle everything else from measurement through final caulk.
Every install carries a 5-year workmanship warranty on labor and installation. Manufacturer warranties on materials are provided separately by the manufacturer. If something is not right with our work, call us and we come out to look at it at no charge. If it is our error, we fix it at no cost to you.
The gap usually sits in what you cannot see before the job is done: whether inside corners are coped or just mitered, whether material was acclimated before install, whether fasteners hit framing or just drywall, and whether nail holes and seams are properly filled. We write a scope before we start so you know exactly what is included, and we stand behind the work with a written warranty.
Interior finish carpentry such as baseboard and casing installation typically does not require a building permit in Hyannis. If your project involves work that does trigger a permit, such as a larger renovation, we handle the drawings and submission. We can confirm what applies to your specific job at the consultation.
Interior trim work can run year-round, which makes it a good fit for the off-season when outdoor work slows. The main scheduling consideration is acclimation: trim material needs time in the home before install, and a house that has been closed up or unheated needs to be at stable interior temperature and humidity first. Many homeowners on Cape Cod book trim work in the fall or winter to have rooms ready before the summer season.
