Custom cabinetry is the design and construction of built-to-fit cabinet systems made to your exact room dimensions and finished to your specifications, from shop drawings through on-site installation: boxes, doors, drawers, hardware, and final scribing to walls and floors.
It is the right call when stock cabinets will not fit the room, when the layout is too complex for a catalog, or when the finish and joinery have to meet a specific standard. On Cape Cod the humid summers and salt air matter: interior millwork installed without acclimating to the house will move, and hardware that is not specified correctly corrodes faster than it should this close to the water.

Before You Start · Cape Cod
If the boxes are failing, face frames are splitting, or the carcass is soft from moisture, replacement makes more sense than refinishing. Surface wear on doors is worth repairing. Structural failure in the box is not.
The one you cannot see matters most. A cabinet box that was face-nailed rather than screwed into wall studs, or shimmed to a hollow section of drywall, can pull free under a full load of dishes or pantry goods. If you do not know what your cabinets are attached to, that is worth finding out before you add more weight.
Custom Cabinetry · Cape Cod
A custom cabinetry project with Forty One Construction runs through seven phases, from the first on-site measurement to the final adjustment and walkthrough in Hyannis. Every phase has a name, a purpose, and a point where you sign off before we move on. Here is what each one covers.
Planning · Phase One
We come to your home, measure the space, and note conditions that affect the design: wall plumb, floor level, ceiling height, and any corners or angles that are out of square. You get a written scope and material selection before anything goes to the shop.
We prepare shop drawings and elevations showing every cabinet run, reveal lines, door style, and hardware location. You review and approve before fabrication starts. Changes made on paper cost nothing. Changes made after the boxes are built do.
Fabrication · Phase Two
Boxes are cut from cabinet-grade plywood, assembled square, with backs let into a dado rather than stapled on. Face frames are pocket-screwed or doweled to the box. Every component is labeled to the shop drawing before it leaves the bench.
Door frames are built to the chosen style, overlay or full inset, and hung to consistent reveal lines. Drawer boxes are dovetailed or doweled, not stapled particleboard. Soft-close hinges and drawer slides are fitted and tested in the shop before delivery to the site.
Stain or paint goes on in the shop in two to three coats with proper cure time between coats. The finish tier, from catalyzed conversion varnish to hand-rubbed lacquer, is agreed at the design stage and matched to approved samples before any topcoat is applied.
Install · Phase Three
Cabinets are set level and plumb, shimmed as needed, and screwed into wall studs with fasteners hitting solid framing. Scribe molding is fitted tight to walls and ceilings that are not perfectly flat. Banking, aligning adjacent cabinet runs so reveal lines are consistent, is done before any door is hung.
Doors and drawers are adjusted so they self-close without racking. We clean the site, then walk the finished installation with you. You see the work, ask questions, and we do not call it done until you agree it is.
Scope · What You Are Buying
A custom cabinetry quote from Forty One Construction covers the design consultation, shop drawings, fabrication of boxes, doors, and drawers, hardware installation, on-site fitting and scribing, and final adjustment. Countertop fabrication, plumbing or electrical rough-in, structural wall changes, and haul-away of existing cabinets are quoted separately unless specified in the scope.
Included in the quote
Not included, quoted separately
Done correctly means boxes built square from 3/4-inch plywood with backs let into a dado, face frames pocket-screwed or doweled, drawer boxes dovetailed or doweled rather than stapled, cabinets shimmed and screwed into wall studs with fasteners hitting solid framing, gaps and reveals consistent within 1/16 inch, doors and drawers that self-close without racking, and finish applied in two to three coats with proper cure time between coats per Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association guidelines.
Cabinet Cost · Cape Cod
Custom cabinetry on Cape Cod typically runs $150 to $1,200 or more per linear foot installed in 2026, depending on tier and complexity. Forty One Construction quotes each project after an on-site visit. Full custom kitchen projects commonly total $15,000 to $70,000 in the Hyannis market.
Kitchen projects commonly fall in the $15,000 to $70,000 range depending on scope and materials.
Cost Factors
The price moves with a handful of real drivers, including wood species, box construction, door style, finish type, hardware, layout complexity, and linear footage.
Painted poplar costs less than walnut or cherry. The species sets the floor for both material and finish cost.
Plywood boxes with dovetailed drawers cost more than particleboard boxes with stapled drawers, and they hold up longer.
Full inset doors require tighter tolerances than overlay doors and take more time to fit and adjust on site.
A catalyzed conversion varnish costs less than a hand-rubbed oil or lacquer topcoat. Finish tier is set at the design stage.
Islands, corner units, and odd angles add fabrication and fitting time compared to a straight run.

The right species and box material depend on your budget, the finish you want, and how the space is used. In a coastal home, hardware choice matters as much as the wood: salt air gets inside, and hinges or slides that are not specified correctly corrode faster than they should. Below are the main options we build with, compared honestly. Whatever the species, we use hardware lines rated for the finish environment.
Painted Wood · Entry Tier
The most common choice for painted cabinets. Poplar machines cleanly, holds paint well, and costs less than hardwoods used for stain-grade work. Best for homeowners who want a crisp painted finish at a controlled budget. In humid Cape Cod summers, poplar needs to acclimate to the house before installation or the doors will move after fitting.
Hardwood · Versatile
Hard maple is a regional standard for both painted and stained cabinets. It machines consistently, accepts stain evenly, and takes paint as well as poplar. Best for homeowners who want flexibility between a painted or light-stained finish. Hardware should be soft-close on maple, because the wood itself does not absorb impact the way softer species do.
Hardwood · Classic
Oak has an open grain that reads clearly through stain and gives a traditional kitchen its character. It is hard, stable, and widely available. Best for homeowners who want a stained finish with visible grain. The open grain means it needs a grain filler or sealer coat before topcoat for a smooth painted finish.
Hardwood · Warm Tone
Cherry is a fine-grained hardwood that deepens in color with light exposure over time. It takes a clear or lightly tinted finish better than a heavy stain. Best for homeowners who want a warm, refined look that changes naturally over years. Cherry is softer than maple and shows dents more readily in a high-traffic kitchen.
Hardwood · Premium
Walnut is the highest-cost domestic hardwood we use regularly. It has a dark, open grain that reads well under an oil or hand-rubbed finish. Best for homeowners who want a premium look and accept a higher material cost. It is stable but can be harder to source in clear, wide boards for large door panels.
Material Comparison
Compare where each species fits best, how it performs in Cape Cod's humid summers, and the finish it takes most naturally.
| Option | Best for | Holds up to humidity | Finish type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Painted poplar | Painted finish | Good with acclimation | Paint |
| Maple | Paint or stain | Very good, stable species | Paint, stain |
| Red or white oak | Traditional stained look | Very good | Stain, sealed paint |
| Cherry | Warm, refined finish | Good | Clear or light stain |
| Walnut | Premium stained finish | Very good | Oil, lacquer |
We name real hardware lines when we spec a job, Blum and Salice soft-close hinges and drawer slides, and we select box material, cabinet-grade plywood or furniture-grade MDF for painted work, based on the project tier. If a lower-cost material is the right call for how you will use the space, we will tell you.
Project Timeline · Cape Cod
A custom cabinetry project with Forty One Construction runs anywhere from two to three weeks for a small vanity or single built-in, six to ten weeks for an average kitchen of 20 to 25 linear feet including shop drawings, fabrication, and two to four days of on-site installation, and ten to twenty or more weeks for large or highly custom kitchens and whole-house millwork, depending on shop backlog and finish schedule.
Three things affect that window here. Shop backlog shifts with the construction season: the Cape's compressed exterior season means interior millwork projects often stack up in the same months, and booking ahead matters. Wood species and finish tier both add or reduce cure time in the schedule. And cabinets installed in a home during a humid Cape Cod summer need time to acclimate before final adjustment, because the same door hung in August will sit differently once the heat drops in September.
Cabinet Quality · Cape Cod
The box is everything you do not see once the doors are on, and it is where cabinets are made to last or made to fail. On Cape Cod, two details decide how long a cabinet installation holds up: how the box is built, and how it is fastened to the wall. Get either wrong and the doors go out of adjustment, the drawers bind, or the run pulls from the wall under load.
A cabinet box built to hold starts with 3/4-inch cabinet-grade plywood sides, a back let into a dado rather than stapled on, and a face frame that is pocket-screwed or doweled to the box rather than glued and nailed. Drawer boxes should be dovetailed or doweled hardwood, not stapled particleboard. Particleboard breaks at the joint under normal loading, and once the substrate swells from kitchen or bathroom moisture, the hinge and slide mounting points lose holding strength. In a coastal home where humidity swings between a dry winter and a humid summer, the box material and joinery are what keep the doors aligned through the seasons.
Cabinets are shimmed level and plumb, then screwed into wall studs with fasteners hitting solid framing, not drywall anchors. Gaps and reveal lines are held consistent within 1/16 inch across the run. Scribe molding is fitted to walls and ceilings that are not flat, because on Cape Cod older homes rarely have perfectly plumb walls. Adjacent cabinet runs are banked so reveal lines align before any door is hung. Soft-close hinges and drawer slides are adjusted so doors and drawers self-close without racking, and the adjustment is checked again at the walkthrough after the finish has fully cured.
Cabinet Longevity · Coastal Home
The box decides it, not the door style. A cabinet built from plywood with dovetailed drawers, fastened into studs and finished with proper cure time between coats, outlasts a particleboard box with stapled drawers regardless of how the exterior looks on day one. We do not publish a single lifespan figure because the honest answer depends on the box construction, the finish tier, and how the space is used, and a number that ignores all three is not useful information.
Forty One Construction backs labor and installation with a 5-year workmanship warranty. Manufacturer warranties on cabinet materials and hardware are provided separately by the manufacturer and vary by product.
Local Cabinet Maker · Cape Cod
Forty One Construction builds custom cabinetry across Cape Cod from our office in Hyannis, and the coastal conditions shape every project. Salt air affects hardware inside the home, humid summers mean wood needs to acclimate before final fitting, and older Cape Cod homes with walls and floors that are out of plumb require careful scribing and shimming that a stock cabinet cannot accommodate. Cabinetry built for a dry inland home is not built for this.
We serve homeowners from the outer Cape through the canal, Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans, Chatham, Brewster, Harwich, Dennis, and Yarmouth on one side, and Hyannis, Centerville, Osterville, Cotuit, Mashpee, Falmouth, Bourne, Sagamore, Sandwich, and Barnstable through the mid- and upper Cape, along with Plymouth. Credentials · Accountability
Daniel Araujo holds a Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License (CSL), Unrestricted (#CS-123114), and the company holds Home Improvement Contractor registration #217279. We carry $1,000,000/$2,000,000 general liability coverage, and a certificate of insurance is available on request. The numbers are printed so you can check them. Learn more about us.
We submit drawings to the Town of Barnstable Building Division and pull the permit in our name. Footings reach frost depth, ledgers get through-bolted and flashed, and every connection is built to pass framing and final inspection, not just to look finished.
You get a written scope up front, so the number in your hand is tied to specific materials and work, not a vague figure that grows halfway through. When quotes look interchangeable on paper, that's usually where the real difference sits.
Interior Carpentry · Cape Cod
Custom cabinetry projects often extend beyond the kitchen. If you want bathroom vanities, built-in bookcases, mudroom lockers, or home office millwork, our carpentry crew handles each of those in the same scope. For exterior work that connects to the interior, including doors and trim, we cover that under our general carpentry services as well.

Custom Decks · Cape Cod
Custom cabinetry requires material purchases and reserved shop time before a single cabinet is built. We follow Massachusetts consumer guidance, which advises against upfront payments exceeding one-third of the total unless special-order materials require it. Payments are tied to written milestones in your scope. Discuss the exact structure with us before signing.
We build face frames and doors in maple, red or white oak, cherry, walnut, and painted poplar. Boxes are cabinet-grade plywood. Hardware lines include Blum and Salice soft-close hinges and slides. Finish tiers run from catalyzed conversion varnish to hand-rubbed oil or lacquer topcoats. We spec the material to your space and your budget.
Most fabrication happens in our shop, so your home is not a job site during the build phase. On-site installation typically runs 2 to 4 days for an average kitchen. Our crew stages materials in one area and cleans up at the end of each day. If anything in the space needs to be cleared before we arrive, we will tell you at the consultation.
Clear the existing cabinet area of dishes, small appliances, and anything stored inside. If we are removing old cabinets as part of the scope, we handle that. Plumbing and electrical rough-in needs to be complete before installation day. If we need anything specific from you, we will say so well before the crew shows up.
Every install carries a 5-year workmanship warranty on labor and installation. Manufacturer warranties on materials are provided separately by the manufacturer. If something is not right with our work, call us and we come out to look at it. If it is our error, we fix it at no cost to you.
The difference is almost always inside the box, not on the door face. Plywood carcasses, dovetail drawer joinery, and properly adjusted soft-close hardware cost more to build than particleboard boxes with stapled drawers. A written scope with your name on it and a 5-year workmanship warranty are also part of what you are buying.
Cabinet installation in an existing space typically does not require a building permit, but structural changes, electrical work, or plumbing moves tied to the project may. We identify any permit requirements during the consultation and handle submissions when they apply to our scope of work.
Cabinetry installation runs year-round since the work is interior, but scheduling around Cape Cod's summer season matters. Shop backlog builds from Memorial Day through Labor Day as seasonal homeowners try to complete projects. Planning earlier in the year typically means better availability and a more predictable installation date. See our full range of carpentry services to plan ahead.
