Engineered wood siding is the installation of wood-strand or wood-fiber composite boards and panels over a weather-resistive barrier on your home's exterior: lap boards, vertical panels, or shingle profiles that replicate the look of painted wood without the rot and insect vulnerability of solid wood.
It is the right call when existing siding has failed, when rot has worked into the sheathing, or when a homeowner wants the clapboard look without the upkeep cycle. On Cape Cod the details decide how long it lasts: salt air corrodes the wrong fasteners, wind-driven rain gets behind siding at every penetration, and unsealed field cuts split during freeze-thaw. The installation, not just the product, determines what you get in year five.

Before You Start · Cape Cod
If the sheathing behind the siding is rotted or the boards are failing at multiple locations, replacement makes more sense than patching. Surface damage in one area is worth repairing. Widespread failure or compromised sheathing is not, because the money goes into something already past its useful life.
The failure you cannot see matters most. Water gets behind siding at the details, not the middle of the wall. A house wrap that was not lapped shingle-fashion, or flashing that was skipped at a window head, will rot sheathing for years before anything shows on the exterior face.
Engineered Wood Siding · Cape Cod
An engineered wood siding install with Forty One Construction runs through seven phases, from the first on-site measurement to the final inspection and cleanup in Hyannis. Every phase has a defined purpose, and you know what is happening before we move on to the next step.
Planning · Phase One
We come to your home, measure all exterior wall areas, and inspect the existing siding and sheathing for rot or moisture damage. You get a written scope that identifies what comes off, what gets repaired, and what profile and finish goes on, before anything is ordered.
We prepare any required permit documentation and submit to the Town of Barnstable Building Division under 780 CMR, the Massachusetts State Building Code. The permit is pulled in our name. Material lead time for specific profiles and colors is typically two to four weeks, and we order once scope is confirmed.
Installation · Phase Two
The crew removes existing siding and inspects sheathing across the full wall area. Rotted or damaged sheathing panels are replaced before anything goes over them. Moisture content is checked before the new system goes on, because installing over wet sheathing is one of the most common shortcuts in exterior work.
A continuous weather-resistive barrier goes on over the sheathing, lapped shingle-fashion from the bottom up with a minimum one-inch overlap at seams. All penetrations, windows, doors, and utility openings, get flashed before the siding starts. This is where wind-driven coastal rain gets stopped, at the barrier and flashing, not the board face.
Starter strips establish the first course angle and keep it consistent up the wall. Corner posts, J-channel at window and door openings, and fascia and soffit trim in matching engineered wood go on before the field siding, so every termination is backed before a board ends against it.
Finish · Phase Three
Boards go on from the bottom up, course by course, with consistent reveal, correct fastener spacing and nail penetration depth per the manufacturer fastening schedule, and expansion gaps at trim per spec. Butt joints get flashing. Every field cut gets sealed with manufacturer-approved sealant before the next board covers it.
We caulk manufacturer-specified joints, touch up factory finish at cut edges, and walk the finished exterior with you. You see the work, ask questions, and we do not call it done until you agree it is. Debris and old siding are hauled off site.
Scope · What You Are Buying
A siding quote from Forty One Construction covers materials and labor for siding and matching trim, the weather-resistive barrier, flashing, fasteners, basic sheathing spot-repair, haul-away of old siding and debris, and standard caulking at manufacturer-specified joints. Extensive structural or framing repair, window and door replacement, gutter work, insulation upgrades, painting beyond factory finish, and permit fees are quoted separately rather than assumed into the number.
Included in the quote
Not included, quoted separately
Done correctly means a continuous WRB lapped shingle-fashion per IRC and manufacturer requirements, flashing at every window head, door, penetration, and butt joint, correct nail type and penetration depth per the fastening schedule with no over-driven fasteners, end-cut sealing on every field cut with manufacturer-approved sealant, expansion gaps at trim, and compliance with local wind-load and coastal exposure code requirements. These are not preferences. They are what inspection and long-term performance require.
Siding Cost · Cape Cod
Engineered wood siding on Cape Cod typically runs $10 to $18 per square foot installed in 2026, with Forty One Construction quoting each project in Hyannis after an on-site measurement. Multi-story homes, complex trim packages, and significant sheathing repair push toward the higher end of that range.
Price is quoted per square foot of installed exterior wall area. Every project is scoped after an on-site visit.
Cost Factors
The price moves with a handful of real drivers, including total wall area, number of stories, sheathing condition, trim complexity, and coastal exposure requirements.
More square footage and more intricate profiles, such as board-and-batten versus standard lap, mean more material and more time.
Rotted or damaged sheathing found at tear-off adds material and labor before new siding can go on.
A two-story or multi-story home requires staging or ladder access that adds time compared to a single-story wall.
Each opening requires flashing, J-channel, and trim work. More openings and decorative trim packages add material and labor.
Salt air requires stainless or hot-dip galvanized fasteners and upgraded flashing details that add cost over inland specs.
2026 Cost Guide
These ranges are a starting point for planning. Every project is quoted after an on-site measurement and inspection.
| Job size / scope | Typical range on Cape Cod (2026) |
|---|---|
| Single wall or addition (small scope) | Lower end of $10-$18/sq ft installed |
| Average single-family home (1,500-2,000 sq ft exterior wall area) | Mid-range; most single-family homes fall within this band |
| Large or multi-story home with complex trim | Upper end; significant rot repair pushes higher |
Permit lead time and material order time factor into the schedule. Every project is quoted after an on-site visit.

The right profile and finish depend on your budget and the look you want, but on Cape Cod, where most homes sit within a few miles of salt water, the fastener spec and field-cut sealing matter as much as the board itself. Below are the options we install, compared honestly. Whatever the profile, we use stainless fasteners so nothing bleeds rust down your new siding.
Lap Profile · Traditional Look
The most common profile and the closest match to traditional New England clapboard. Installed in overlapping horizontal courses with a consistent reveal, it sheds water reliably when the WRB, flashing, and end-cut sealing are done right. Best for homeowners who want the painted wood look with reduced maintenance compared to solid wood.
Panel Profile · Contemporary Look
Vertical or board-and-batten panel profiles suit contemporary and transitional homes. Panels cover more wall area per piece, which can reduce installation time on simple walls, but require careful flashing at horizontal Z-flashing breaks. Best for homeowners who want a clean, vertical look.
Shake Profile · Coastal Classic
Shake-profile engineered panels replicate the look of hand-split cedar shingles without the maintenance cycle of real wood in a salt-air environment. Installed in staggered courses, they suit Cape Cod cottage styles. Best for homeowners who want the shingle aesthetic with improved moisture and insect resistance.
Trim Package · Complete Exterior
Matching trim, fascia, and soffit boards in engineered wood tie the siding installation together so the full exterior is consistent in material and finish. Factory-primed or factory-finished options are available. Trim pieces require the same end-cut sealing discipline as field siding, because cut ends left unsealed are where moisture enters and freeze-thaw damage starts.
Finish Options · Factory vs. Field
Factory-primed boards arrive ready for a field paint coat in your chosen color. Factory-finished boards arrive pre-painted in a manufacturer color and require only touch-up at field cuts. Pre-finished boards reduce on-site painting time and deliver a more consistent film thickness than a field-applied coat, but limit color choices to what the manufacturer offers.
Material Comparison
Compare where each profile fits best, how it handles Cape Cod coastal exposure, and what maintenance it requires after installation.
| Option | Best for | Holds up to salt air | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lap (clapboard profile) | Traditional look | Good with correct fasteners | Low |
| Panel (board-and-batten) | Contemporary look | Good with Z-flashing at breaks | Low |
| Shake/shingle profile | Coastal cottage style | Good | Low |
| Factory-primed boards | Custom paint color | Good after field painting | Low to medium |
| Factory-finished boards | Minimal on-site painting | Good | Very low |
We spec real products when we quote a job, including LP SmartSide strand and panel lines, Collins TruWood, KWP products, and Allura engineered wood trim. If a factory-primed board in a standard profile is the right call for your budget and paint plan, we will tell you rather than upsell a pre-finished option you do not need.
Project Timeline · Cape Cod
An engineered wood siding project with Forty One Construction takes anywhere from one to two days for a single wall or addition, one to two weeks for an average single-family home with around 1,500 to 2,000 square feet of exterior wall area, and three to four weeks for a large or multi-story home with a complex trim package, plus two to four weeks of material lead time before installation begins.
Three things stretch that window here. Material lead time for specific profiles and colors, often two to four weeks, means scheduling starts well before the first board goes on. Weather limits exterior work from roughly November through March, when freeze-thaw rules out installs that depend on cure and dry time. And summer traffic on Route 28 and Route 6 between Memorial Day and Labor Day affects crew arrival and material delivery, which we build into an honest schedule rather than promising a date we cannot hold.
Installation Details · Cape Cod
The installation system is everything behind and between the boards: the weather-resistive barrier, the flashing at every penetration, the fastener spec, and the end-cut sealing on every field cut. On Cape Cod, two details decide whether a siding job lasts: how the WRB and flashing handle wind-driven rain, and whether every cut end is sealed before it is covered. Get either wrong and moisture works in at the details, not the middle of the wall.
A continuous weather-resistive barrier lapped shingle-fashion from the bottom up, with a minimum one-inch overlap at seams, is the first line of defense against moisture. On the Cape, wind-driven rain arrives sideways off the water and gets behind siding at windows, doors, utility penetrations, and butt joints, not at the middle of a board. Every one of those locations gets flashed with the WRB properly integrated before a board goes over it. Skipping or misrouting a flashing lap is a hidden shortcut that shows up as rotted sheathing years later.
Salt air corrodes standard fasteners within a season or two, leaving rust streaks down new siding. We use stainless or hot-dip galvanized nails at the correct length and penetration depth per the manufacturer fastening schedule, with no over-driven fasteners that break the board face. Every field cut, any board end trimmed on site, gets sealed with manufacturer-approved sealant before installation. Unsealed cut ends absorb water, and water that gets into an open end joint freezes, expands, and splits the board from roughly November through March. Expansion gaps of one quarter inch at trim allow boards to move through humidity cycles without buckling. These details are what separate work that still looks right in year five from work that does not.
Performance · Coastal Exposure
The installation decides it, not just the product. Engineered wood siding installed with the correct WRB, properly lapped flashing, stainless fasteners, and sealed field cuts outperforms the same product installed with shortcuts. We do not publish a single performance figure, because the honest answer depends on installation quality, coastal exposure level, and maintenance, and a number that ignores all three is not useful to a homeowner making a real decision.
Forty One Construction backs labor and installation with a 5-year workmanship warranty. Manufacturer warranties on siding and trim products are provided separately by the manufacturer and vary by product line.
Local Siding Contractor · Cape Cod
Forty One Construction installs engineered wood siding across Cape Cod from our office in Hyannis, and the coastal conditions shape every installation we do. Salt air corrodes the wrong fasteners within a season or two, wind-driven rain off the water requires correct flashing laps at every penetration, and freeze-thaw from November through March means unsealed cut ends are not an option here the way they might be ignored inland. Siding spec'd and installed for inland Massachusetts is not built for this coast.
We serve homeowners from the outer Cape through the canal, Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans, Chatham, Brewster, Harwich, Dennis, and Yarmouth on one side, and Hyannis, Centerville, Osterville, Cotuit, Mashpee, Falmouth, Bourne, Sagamore, Sandwich, and Barnstable through the mid- and upper Cape, along with Plymouth. See our work in Hyannis and Barnstable.
Credentials · Accountability
Daniel Araujo holds a Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License (CSL), Unrestricted (#CS-123114), and the company holds Home Improvement Contractor registration #217279. We carry $1,000,000/$2,000,000 general liability coverage, and a certificate of insurance is available on request. The numbers are printed so you can check them. Learn more about us.
We submit drawings to the Town of Barnstable Building Division and pull the permit in our name. Footings reach frost depth, ledgers get through-bolted and flashed, and every connection is built to pass framing and final inspection, not just to look finished.
You get a written scope up front, so the number in your hand is tied to specific materials and work, not a vague figure that grows halfway through. When quotes look interchangeable on paper, that's usually where the real difference sits.
Exterior Services · Cape Cod
Planning an exterior update often goes beyond siding alone. If the roof needs attention at the same time, our roofing work in Hyannis runs alongside siding projects without doubling mobilization. Trim, fascia, and soffit packages in matching engineered wood are included when scoped with the siding install. For interior finish work tied to exterior changes, such as window casing or door trim, our carpentry crew handles the detail work.

Custom Decks · Cape Cod
Massachusetts consumer guidance advises homeowners not to pay more than one-third of the estimated cost upfront unless special-order materials are needed. Engineered wood siding in specific profiles or factory colors is often a special-order item, which we flag at the quote stage. We work within that standard and tie payments to a written scope. Talk specifics with us before you sign anything.
We install LP SmartSide strand and panel lines, Collins TruWood, KWP products, and Allura engineered wood trim, in lap, panel, shake-profile, and trim configurations. Factory-primed boards accept a field paint coat in any color. Factory-finished boards arrive pre-painted and require only touch-up at field cuts. We spec the product to your profile choice, finish preference, and budget at the quote stage.
Siding work happens on the exterior, so daily life inside is not significantly affected. The crew stages materials along the wall being worked and clears each area at the end of the day. During summer, Route 28 and Route 6 traffic can shift arrival times and material delivery windows, and we account for that in scheduling so it does not affect your project timeline.
Move vehicles, furniture, or planters away from the exterior walls being worked. Trim back any shrubs or plantings that sit against the foundation so the crew can access the full wall. If there are window boxes or shutters that need to come off, we handle that as part of tear-off. If we need anything specific from you before we start, we will say so at the site visit.
Every install carries a 5-year workmanship warranty on labor and installation. Manufacturer warranties on siding and trim products are provided separately by the manufacturer. If something is not right with our work, call us, we come out and look at it, and if it is our error, we correct it at no cost to you.
When two siding quotes list the same product, the lower one typically skips something you cannot see until water gets in: a continuous WRB lapped correctly, flashing at every window head and butt joint, stainless fasteners instead of standard nails, and sealed field cuts on every board end. On the Cape, those shortcuts show up by year three. We are a licensed local contractor who pulls the permit in our name and backs the work with a written warranty.
Siding replacement in Hyannis typically requires a permit under the Town of Barnstable Building Division and 780 CMR, the Massachusetts State Building Code. Requirements can vary by scope and municipality across the Cape. We handle permit preparation and submission and pull the permit in our name so the work is on record and inspected correctly.
The exterior season runs roughly April through November, and that is when siding installs run best. Freeze-thaw from November through March rules out installs that depend on sealant and caulk cure time. Summer books early because of the Cape's seasonal population swing, so the shoulder seasons, spring and fall, are the most reliable window for scheduling without competing with peak-season demand. Ordering materials two to four weeks ahead means planning earlier than most homeowners expect.
